A special court in Palampur has sentenced a Kangra man to nine months in jail and a Rs 30,000 fine for drugs trafficking charges registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Sunil Katoch, alias Lucky, from Rit village in Jaisinghpur tehsil, was arrested after police found him carrying 130 gm of charas in March 2021. A case was registered against Katoch, who was travelling in an Alto car bearing temporary registration number HP 2021-T/R-4983B during a vehicle-checking operation at Khaira, according to the prosecution.
The court acknowledged the role of independent witnesses in establishing the case and finding Katoch guilty.
This recent conviction highlights the importance of rigorous law enforcement in Himachal's narcotics crisis. As borders continue to be porous and the demand for drugs rises among youth, the state government has been attempting to crack down on such crimes.
In this context, Katoch's sentencing demonstrates the authority's resolve to tackle the drug problem and enforce the law equitably.
