The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, recently convened a virtual Global Forum to create a cohesive international response to the COVID-19 pandemic and establish a plan to recover and rebuild. The forum focused on placing those most affected by the pandemic, particularly informal workers, the low-paid, less-skilled workers, women, and young people, at the center of these efforts.
The ILO aims to strengthen the world of work post-pandemic by fostering a robust labor market recovery founded on the principles of decent work. The forum also addressed the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for a Just Transition initiative to create jobs in the green, digital, and care economies and expand social protection floors for those without access. Further, it championed scaling up climate action to achieve a carbon-neutral global economy.
The ILO believes that returning to pre-pandemic models will not address the challenges facing the world of work. Instead, the crisis presents an opportunity to build a more inclusive and sustainable future by prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable and addressing inequalities among and within countries to build a more resilient global economy.
