The grim details of the sexual assault on a young girl in Nellore's Theepanuru village have finally seen justice after the district's special court for the Protection of Children in Sexual Offences (POCSO) sentenced a 21-year-old man to a maximum of 26 years in prison.
Police said Kanna Srinivasulu was convicted of kidnapping and raping the minor girl when she was left alone at home. The crime occurred in July 2021, and the victim's parents subsequently filed a complaint with local police.
Judge Siripi Reddy delivered the verdict after evidence against the accused was presented in court, confirming the maximum sentence possible and a Rs 20,000 fine.
The judge's decision came after police investigations concluded that Srinivasulu had kidnapped the girl, taking her to an abandoned house near an isolated place at Varagali crossroads for the assault.
This case sheds light on the heinous crimes against minors in India, as activists call for more to be done to protect children. Meanwhile, the judge's decision signals a new approach to justice for these crimes.
