She was a bubbly girl, full of life and dreams. But a few months ago, 10-year-old Divya Singh perished after falling from a rooftop while playing with a group of friends. Or was it something more sinister?
According to local authorities, the 10-year-old Hyderabad girl was murdered by a fellow 14-year-old neighbour after she discovered that her brand-new cricket bat had gone missing and was being used by him.
The boy, who is from the same locality, is said to have taken the cricket bat from under the victim's bed, where it was hidden, and secretly began using it for practice. Unable to find the cricket bat when she returned home, the 10-year-old girl went to her neighbour's house to ask for it back. With horror, she witnessed her missing cricket bat being used by the 14-year-old neighbour.
The boy, in fear of being chastised for stealing, hit the girl on the head with the very bat to silence her. Unfortunately, the blow proved fatal, and the girl died on the spot.
The boy, now in custody, claims that the killing was an accident and that he never intended to hit her with the bat. The girl's family does not file any complaint, urging the whole matter be considered an accident and kept out of the courts.
Many who know the boy and the girl are perplexed, unable to decide if it was a tragic accident or a crime. But all agree that it is a terrible loss of life and that nothing can bring Divya back.
