48 Weather Stations install for Enhanced Early Warning Systems

In October 2024, the Himachal Pradesh government unveiled an ambitious plan to set up 48 automatic weather stations across the state, a move aimed at enhancing early warning systems for heavy rainfall and precipitation. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the state's ability to predict and respond to extreme weather events, which have become increasingly frequent due to changing climate patterns.

The installation of these weather stations will allow for real-time data collection, providing critical insights into weather patterns. This data will be crucial in issuing timely warnings for extreme weather, helping communities prepare and take necessary precautions to minimize damage and loss of life. The stations will also aid in improving the accuracy of weather forecasts, particularly in mountainous regions prone to heavy rainfall, landslides, and flash floods.

One of the key beneficiaries of this system will be the agricultural and horticultural sectors, which are highly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. Early warnings will allow farmers to plan accordingly, safeguarding crops and reducing losses. Moreover, the network of weather stations is expected to play a pivotal role in disaster preparedness, ensuring that the government can respond swiftly to weather-related emergencies.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which will provide technical expertise and support for the installation and operation of the stations. Additionally, the government plans to expand this network to the block level in the future, further strengthening the state’s capacity for early weather alerts and disaster management.

This proactive measure is part of Himachal Pradesh's ongoing efforts to build a more disaster-resilient state, ensuring that its residents are better prepared for the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
