Joint Crime Operation Charges Haulier in Largest Ever Irish Cannabis Bust

A Irish businessman and haulier was charged in a special sitting of Gorey District Court regarding the largest ever cannabis bust in Ireland, with a street value of up to 3m.

Tony Abbey, 51, of Tullow, County Carlow, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis for sale or supply at Rosslare Europort on August 22.

He was remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear before Wexford District Court on Wednesday.

Det Garda Stephen Burke said Mr. Abbey, an international haulier, was charged after caution at Wexford Garda Station on August 24.

He added that Abbey made no reply after each charge was put to him and said investigations were ongoing.

Defence solicitor Chris Hogan said his client had fully cooperated with customs officials.

The defence added that Mr. Abbey had offered 40,000 euros and a 20,000 euro surety as part of his bail and said he would adhere to any conditions set by the court.

Judge Walsh granted bail on the terms that the accused sign on twice a day at Tullow Garda Station, observe a curfew from 11pm to 7am, provide a mobile phone number, and not to apply for any travel documents.

The 150.6kg of cannabis were discovered by Revenue Officers during a routine check of a truck that arrived from Bilbao, Spain.
