For a 54-year-old man in Laurel County, Kentucky, the odds of getting caught were stacked against him. Allegedly poaching and harboring over 6,000 pills and 5.7 pounds of crystal meth, law enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted a joint investigation after being tipped off on August 12. It wasn't the poaching they were originally looking for, but when authorities obtained a search warrant, they uncovered an operation extending through the dirt floor and into the second story of the garage.
Authorities arrested Scottie Shelton of Laurel County, charging him with multiple counts in the poaching and drug operation uncovered. It is unclear if any animals were seized during the raid, but the DEA kept drug charges, and Warden Creech led the case, filing on the poaching charges.
The case is a reminder for residents to periodically conduct safety checks on their garages and properties to prevent such occurrences. Poaching and drug operations are harmful and sometimes deadly offenses, and the proactive work of the DEA and law enforcement led to an important arrest.
