PM Modi Tweets After Landing In Tianjin, China

India Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has arrived in China ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

PM Modi tweeted after landing in Tianjin, China, saying he was "looking forward to deliberations at the SCO" and "meeting world leaders." This will be the first time India will participate in the SCO as a full-fledged member, and India is expected to be admitted into the Shanghai Cooperative Organization during this summit.

The SCO is a eight-member economic and security bloc, originally founded in 2001 by China, Russia, and Central Asian states to combat terrorism and promote regional cooperation.

The summit, to be held in the Chinese city of Qingdao, will also be attended by presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The membership of India and Pakistan is expected to increase the organizational reach and enhance the reputation of the SCO. The grouping accounts for over 60% of the world's population and a third of the global economy.

Though the main focus of the summit is expected to be on regional security and cooperation, amid tensions between India and Pakistan, it will be interesting to see whether the two countries can put their differences aside for the sake of regional cooperation.

The admission of the two Asian giants could also give a boost to the SCO at a time when China's influence is growing and western powers are increasingly being seen as unreliable partners.

Stay tuned for more updates on the SCO summit.
