A UK nurse has won a staggering 30,000 in an equal-pay settlement after accusing her colleague of repeatedly rolling her eyes at her and other discriminatory behavior. This massive payout sheds light on the underlying discrimination still prevalent in the UK healthcare system.
Nurse Gemma Baxter worked at the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for over six years. Her issues with her coworkers started in 2019, when she was transferred to a new team and immediately experienced discriminatory behavior from another nurse, Shabana Iqbal. Baxter accused Iqbal of frequently rolling her eyes at her and disrespecting her in front of patients and colleagues.
After attempting to raise awareness about Iqbal's behavior among higher Trust officials, Baxter felt her concerns were dismissed. She then took her case to the Advisory, Conciliation, and Arbitration Service (ACAS), an organization that provides advice and guidance to employers and employees to avoid or resolve workplace problems.
The case went to a settlement conference where an independent mediator ultimately ruled that the Trust must pay Baxter 30,000 for Iqbal's behavior. A spokesperson for the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust commented that the organization is committed to promoting fairness and equality, and that they have strong policies in place to deal with discrimination and bullying in the workplace.
This case sheds light on the reality of discrimination that often goes unchecked in healthcare facilities in the UK. Despite Baxter's settlement, it's important to recognize that many other nurses across the UK may be facing similar discriminatory behaviors that go unaddressed.
