Uttarakhand Government Allocates ₹1,480 Crore for Disaster Management

In December 2024, the Indian government sanctioned ₹1,480 crore to Uttarakhand for disaster management. This funding aims to enhance the state's ability to respond to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and earthquakes by improving infrastructure and preparedness measures. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the amount under the World Bank-aided Uttarakhand Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Project. Dhami emphasized that this financial aid would significantly help reduce the impact of disasters, enhancing the state's capacity for relief and rescue operations.

The project outlines several key initiatives, including the construction of 45 bridges to improve connectivity and facilitate swift movement during emergencies, and the implementation of 8 road safety measures to enhance the safety of roadways, particularly in disaster-prone areas. Additionally, the project includes the establishment of 10 disaster shelters to provide safe havens for affected populations during disasters, and the construction and strengthening of 19 fire stations to bolster firefighting capabilities across the state. There are also plans to develop training centers for the State Disaster Response Force to ensure effective and timely responses to emergencies, along with measures to control forest fires, a significant concern in the region.

The project, which is a five-year initiative, underscores a concerted effort to strengthen Uttarakhand’s disaster management infrastructure and improve resilience against future calamities. The loan agreement was signed on December 16, 2024, between the Central Government, the Uttarakhand Government, and the World Bank. This substantial investment reflects a proactive approach to disaster management, aiming to safeguard lives and property in Uttarakhand’s vulnerable regions.
