Young voters to decide fate of Tirupati bypoll

The political atmosphere in the state is witnessing a hot phase with the completion of the first phase of elections and the campaign intensifying for the second phase and the counting of votes scheduled to be held on May 23. In this backdrop, the stage is set for the two-day yearly Telugu Desam Party (TDP) conclave - Mahanadu - in Tirupati from May 27.

Top leaders from the party, including former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, will be addressing the public and party workers at the venue in Renigunta on the outskirts of the temple city.

The party has taken this decision as the election schedule for the Tirupati Lok Sabha seat and the vacancies for the Assembly seats fell vacant due to the sudden demise of M. Narasimhan, a TDP member, and Bhimla Yadaraju of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The bye-elections for both seats are to be held on May 30.

Political observers say that the party conclave at Tirupati and the bye-elections to the Tirupati Lok Sabha seat and the nearby Assembly constituency could turn the tide in favour of the party which wins the voter's confidence.

"It is a great opportunity for the TDP to regain its lost ground in the constituency. Infighting and groupism in the YSRCP and the dissatisfaction of the voters over the performance of the BJP-led government at the Centre and the state could pave the way for the TDP to win the seat," a political analyst told MediaOutReach.com.

It is worth noting that the Tirupati Lok Sabha constituency has nearly 3.5 lakh young voters, and parties are focusing on these first-time voters during the campaign to win their confidence.

"The youth and students will decide the fate of the bye-elections to the Tirupati Lok Sabha seat and the adjoining Assembly constituency.

The TDP is hoping to cash in on the resentment among the youth over the unemployment policies of the BJP government at the Centre and the state," a senior TDP leader told MediaOutReach.com.

The atmosphere in the constituency is palpable with excitement as the major parties have rolled out their star campaigners to woo the voters.

While the YSRCP has fielded Pradip Kumar Reddy, son of the deceased Bhimla Yadaraju, the TDP has fielded Stalem Chindu, a local leader and former Tirupati Mayor. Former MLA M. Sugunamma is the BJP candidate while the Congress has fielded a former journalist, Bhushana Narasimhan.

The results of the bye-elections are expected to be seen as a referendum on the performance of the respective parties in the Gram Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections, held earlier this month.
