Centre Sanctions ₹12,554 Crore to States for Disaster Relief

In September 2024, the Indian government allocated ₹12,554 crore to various states for disaster relief and rehabilitation. This funding aims to support states in managing and mitigating the effects of natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and landslides.

In addition to the disaster relief funds, the Centre sanctioned ₹890.69 crore for the expansion and modernization of fire services in five states. This initiative is part of the "Scheme for Expansion and Modernisation of Fire Services in the States," launched on July 4, 2023.The scheme focuses on enhancing firefighting capabilities by procuring modern equipment and strengthening state headquarters and urban fire stations. The Fifteenth Finance Commission recommended a provision of ₹5,000 crore for strengthening fire services at the state level.

Furthermore, the government is actively training volunteers under the 'Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme' to build a network of trained individuals who can assist during emergencies. This initiative aims to empower youth to play a pivotal role in disaster management and response.

The Centre also plans to amend the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to enhance the effectiveness of disaster management strategies and ensure a more coordinated response to natural calamities. These measures reflect the government's commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms across the country.

These initiatives underscore the government's proactive approach to disaster management, aiming to bolster the resilience of states and communities against natural disasters.
