A distressing incident in Hyderabad saw a man lose Rs 7.5 lakh via a malicious WhatsApp app, ending up in his bank account being compromised. This incident highlights the severity of online fraud, and the Hyderabad Police have issued a warning to all citizens.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, downloaded a fake app disguised as one named after a Central government farmer's scheme. This app was sent via WhatsApp and turned out to be malware that gave unauthorized access to the victim's savings account and fixed deposits.

The criminal activity went as far as compromising the man's WhatsApp account, with multiple unauthorized transactions occurring afterwards. The victim reported the incident on August 24th, and investigators found that the malicious APK carried malware capable of accessing sensitive information and enabling transactions.

The Hyderabad Police have issued warnings against downloading or installing APK files sent over WhatsApp, SMS, or through unknown links. They urge citizens to only install apps from official sources such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store, to keep their phones updated, use trusted antivirus software, and to never share personal information such as OTPs, PINs, or passwords as banks do not ask for these.

It's also important to report incidents of online fraud immediately, either via the dedicated 1930 helpline number or via the cybercrime.gov.in website. A Hyderabad helpline has also been set up at 8712665171 for emergency assistance.
