Empowering Women in Kerala through Self-Defence Training

The State Commission for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Kerala, has announced that it will begin providing free self-defence training to women in the state, intending to empower and protect them from potential threats. The Commission has partnered with various local NGOs and community centers to facilitate these training sessions. This initiative comes as a proactive measure in response to rising concerns about women's safety in the state.

According to recent statistics, Kerala records nearly 300 sexual assault cases and over 1,000 cases of physical violence against women each year. In an alarming trend, these numbers have been escalating over the past decade. The free self-defence training classes will aim to provide women and girls with basic defense techniques, intimidation tactics, and emotional empowerment to confront these issues.

Commission member Mrs. Pradeepa Panicker stated, "Women should not be limited by their fear. We want to equip them with the physical and psychological tools to feel capable and confident in the face of potential threats." She further added, "The training sessions will emphasize practical combat skills, but also reinforce a stronger sense of confidence, awareness, and vocal empowerment."

The program is expected to begin in early 2023, with the specific schedule and locations to be announced soon.

Conclusion:

Mrs. Pradeepa Panicker's statement emphasizes the holistic approach this initiative takes, fostering an environment where women feel confident and safe in their communities. By promoting self-defense education for women, the State Commission for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Kerala, aims to address the rising concerns around women's safety and empower women to take control of their personal security. This proactive approach is a commendable step towards creating a safer and more resilient society, particularly prioritizing the wellbeing of the state's women.
