US Open 2025: Sinner Beats Shapovalov, Wong's Run Ends Against Rublev

Italian fifth seed Jannik Sinner fought back to defeat Canadian Denis Shapovalov in four sets and book his place in the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows.

The defending champion looked out of sorts early on, dropping the opening set 6-1 in just 29 minutes. Shapovalov appeared to be on top of his game, exploiting his opponent's lack of confidence and hitting 17 winners to take the first-set blow out. But Sinner responded well, taking the next set 6-4 and avoiding a nervous fifth set by winning the fourth 6-0.

The 20-year-old Italian had looked nervous at times in the early stages of the match, but grew in confidence as he won an astonishing 89% of his first-serve points after dropping the opener.

Shapovalov, who many thought would be a serious contender for the title after his strong showing at Wimbledon this year, paid the price for his inability to keep his serve together, hitting 11 double faults and surrendering six breaks of serve in total.

Sinner, who became the youngest men's singles champion at the US Open since Pete Sampras in 1990 last year, reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the second year in a row.

He will face off against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, who beat South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo in straight sets, for a place in the quarter-finals.

In other matches, Canadian prospect Coleman Wong's impressive run at his maiden Grand Slam tournament came to an end after a tight three-setter against Russian Andrey Rublev.

The 18-year-old qualifier, who became the first Canadian man to reach the third round at the US Open in the tournament's history, started well, taking the first set 6-4.

But world number seven Rublev, who had dropped just six games in his first two matches, rallied to take the match into a deciding set, before closing out the match 6-3 to progress.

In the women's draw, Iga Swiatek survived a huge scare against US wildcard Bethanie Mattek-Sands, coming back from a set down to win their round-of-16 clash.

The top seed and defending champion dropped the opening set 6-2, but rebounded to take the match into a decider, eventually winning 6-2 in the third.

Swiatek, who is bidding to become the first woman to win back-to-back titles at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 2014-15, will face off against unseeded American Amanda Anisimova for a place in the quarter-finals.
