England's Alex Hales etched his name among the elites of T20 cricket on Sunday, joining compatriot Luke Wright as the only two Englishman to ever do so. The 36-year-old right-handed batter from England became the third cricketer in the world to score 14,000 runs in T20s. He achieved this feat during his team Abu Dhabi's match versus Northern Warriors in the ongoing International League T20 in the UAE.
Starting the tournament slowly with scores of 4 and 11, Hales found his form and helped seal a five-wicket victory over Northern Warriors. His innings of 71 not out off just 38 deliveries propelled his team to an important win and cemented their place at the top of the points table.
Hales, who has played 399 T20s, now has 14,068 runs at a strike rate of 139.58 and a staggering average of 34.07. The batting powerhouse has smashed 85 half-centuries and 49 tonnes in the shortest format of the game. Former West Indies opener Chris Gayle was the first batsman to score 14,000 T20 runs. Kieron Pollard, the West Indies captain, is the only other player to achieve the milestone. Both Gayle and Pollard were part of the IPL 2022, failing to fire for their respective franchises.
Gayle retired from the IPL after failing to be picked up by any of the franchises in the 2023 IPL auction. The 40-year-old concluded his IPL career, which lasted for around 15 years, with a disappointing outing for the Punjab Kings in the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Pollard's form dipped drastically during 2022 IPL as he managed only 272 runs in 14 matches for Mumbai Indians. Despite the dip in form, both Gayle and Pollard are considered legends of the game and will always be remembered for their awe-inspiring performance in the T20 format.
With Hales turning out to be in superb form in the ongoing ILT20, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders find themselves perched at the top spot on the points table. With seven points from four games, Knight Riders are placed ahead of Dubai Capitals by net run rate. The two teams are set to face each other on Monday, January 23, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
