The SANJAY system, launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on January 24, 2025, marks a significant step forward in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Army. This innovative Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) integrates advanced sensors to provide a comprehensive surveillance picture.
The SANJAY system is an automated platform that processes data from various battlefield sensors, ensuring accurate information and preventing duplication. It fuses this data to create a unified surveillance picture, operating over a secure Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network.
Equipped with cutting-edge sensors and analytics, SANJAY is capable of monitoring vast land borders and providing highly accurate assessments. It plays a crucial role in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations, acting as a force multiplier.
The induction of SANJAY into the Indian Army will occur in three phases from March to October 2025. It will be deployed across all operational brigades, divisions, and corps, with 2025 being designated as the "Year of Reforms" by the Ministry of Defence.
Developed in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY exemplifies the Indian Army's commitment to self-reliance, known as ‘Aatmanirbharta’. The project follows the Army's 'Year of Technology Absorption', marking a strategic move towards indigenously developed military technology.
The system leverages artificial intelligence and information-based techniques to assess battlefield scenarios. It collects voice, video, and image data, which is transmitted securely for faster, more informed decision-making by military commanders.
Surveillance is essential for understanding terrain, infrastructure, and troop placements. SANJAY enhances data collection and analysis, enabling commanders to respond quickly to threats in both conventional and sub-conventional operations.
The development of SANJAY involved an investment of approximately Rs 2,402 crore, underlining the Government of India's focus on strengthening national defense through advanced technology.
