After controversial videos sparked violent attacks between political opponents in the region, the Nellore district will be under Police Act Section 30 until September 30. According to SP G Krishnakanth, the police chief responsible for maintaining law and order, the decision was made to avoid any further unrest.
Police Act Section 30 gives local authorities the power to cancel public meetings and demonstrations if there is a fear of a breach of the peace. Political parties and other organizations have been advised to avoid organizing such events, and if they do, they must obtain permission from the local authorities beforehand. Krishnakanth warned that strict action will be taken against those who try to disrupt the peace.
The move comes after a video went viral allegedly showing a conspiracy to assassinate Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, which led to attacks and counter-attacks between the ruling TDP and Opposition YSRCP.
As a result of the volatile political situation, many locals are concerned that the Section 30 enforcement will have a negative impact on the local economy and civil society. Some critics of the decision have spoken out on social media, especially now with the festival season approaching when many families rely on selling their products and services.
At this point, it's unclear how the police will enforce the act, but officials have made it clear that they will do so rigorously. Amidst fears of unrest, the move is definitely going to impact the local citizens and the economy of the district, but officials are more concerned about maintaining law and order at all costs.
