Iran is at a crossroads and the collapse of its current regime could potentially lead to civil war, according to a new report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The Islamic Republic has been through unprecedented protests and widespread unrest in recent years, with calls for regime change intensifying, even from prominent exiled Iranians.
The report paints a grim picture of the potential outcomes should the regime buckle under the pressure of these internal demands, stating that the resulting power vacuum could allow hard-line clerics and military officials to seize power, sparking clashes with already-restive ethnic minorities. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) could take control of the oil-rich areas, dividing the country into a federal system which further exacerbates the risk of civil conflict.
"The regime in Iran is crumbling and we could be seeing the beginning of the end of the Islamic Republic," says Hassan Mohaddessin, co-author of the report. "It is imperative that the international community becomes acutely aware of the situation in Iran and actively works to prevent the country from descending into civil war."
This comes as Iran continues to be in the international spotlight, with ongoing negotiations over its nuclear program and tensions with the US and its allies in the Middle East.
Could this be the beginning of the end for the Islamic Republic of Iran? Only time will tell.
