Indian batting legend Cheteshwar Pujara has shared a letter he received from Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanking him for the honour. The veteran cricketer, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, took to Instagram and posted a picture of the letter signed by the Prime Minister.
"Pujara, you were a reminder of the beauty of the longer format. Your determination and focus were unparalleled. You have shown us that the spirit of resilience is very much alive," Modi wrote in the letter.
Pujara said it was a privilege to have played for India and fulfilled his dream of representing the country. The veteran batsman scored 5,248 runs in 93 Tests at an average of 45.31. He was the backbone of the Indian batting line-up for many years and was known for his patience and determination.
"I am sure you will continue to contribute to society with your qualities and efforts. Best wishes for the journey ahead," Modi added in the letter.
Pujara said it was a moment of great pride for him and he was grateful to the Prime Minister for the appreciation. "PM Modi's appreciation and blessings mean a lot to me. I am grateful to him for this letter and for always supporting me and ensuring that sports in our country prosper," Pujara said in a statement.
"We play sports to bring joy to the people and hearing things like this makes all the hard work and sacrifices worth it. I only hope that I have been able to inspire many others to take up the sport and fall in love with it, the way I did," he added.
