Stealing deliveries to fund a lavish lifestyle, Amazon delivery boy arrested with $68,000 worth of parcels

For many of us, our jobs are a means to an end. But for 24-year-old Mohammed Zakir, who worked as a delivery boy for Amazon, his job was only a means to a vicious cycle of spending and stealing to fund a lavish lifestyle. His cycle came to a halt when he was caught attempting to steal 171 parcels worth Rs 49 lakh, including 45 iPhones.

Amazon deliveries are commonplace on every street in India nowadays. So much so that we often treat our delivery people as errand runners. We expect them to be punctual with deliveries, keep a tight schedule, and often deliver parcels within a specific time frame. So it came as a surprise to many that a delivery boy was able to steal hundreds of parcels while on the job.

Mohammed Zakir had a habit of stealing products from his deliveries since 2020. He would pilfer products valued under Rs 10,000 to avoid raising suspicion from customers or Amazon. He would then sell these products for a discounted rate to fund his spending habits.

But his spending habits outpaced his thievery, which encouraged him to steal more expensive products. He would often post these stolen products to his friends and relatives, who would then sell them online. In his last heist, he had intended to steal laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices, but was caught red-handed by the police.

Zakir's spending financed a lavish lifestyle, funded through his job as a deliveryman for Amazon. He spent his money on motorcycles, expensive meals, electronics, and outings at malls and movie theaters, all of which funded his lavish lifestyle.

When he was apprehended, he expressed his intentions to use the money to buy a new cell phone and a motorcycle. Zakir's case is a cautionary tale to all delivery companies that even the smallest lapses in surveillance can result in huge losses, and that employees who are left to their own devices may take advantage of their position.

As for Zakir, his dream of becoming a homeowner will now be replaced by a night in the confines of a prison cell.
