Augsburg midfielder Robin Fellhauer has been discharged from the hospital following a concussion he suffered in the club's loss to Bayern Munich.
The 27-year-old midfielder was released from the hospital on Wednesday morning after spending the night being monitored closely by medical staff. He avoided any serious injuries despite a scary collision with Bayern defender Sacha Boey in stoppage time of the 2-3 defeat.
Fellhauer had collided with Boey in an aerial challenge and appeared to hit the back of his head on the pitch as his neck bent back sharply. The Augsburg midfielder, who joined from Dynamo Moscow in the summer, stayed down for more than 10 minutes as he received treatment before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
The Bundesliga has implemented several measures to tackle head injuries and concussions amid growing concerns over the long-term impact of such injuries in recent years. All persons involved in matches, from players to coaches and officials, have been given increased education and training on recognizing such injuries and the need for longer recovery periods.
Players who suffer a concussion are also barred from playing for a minimum of three weeks and must be cleared by a doctor before they can return to action.
Speaking after the game, Augsburg coach Manuel Baum revealed he had spoken to Fellhauer via text message and that the midfielder was in "good spirits." Fellhauer himself also tweeted shortly after the incident, writing: "Thanks for all the messages. I'm doing okay, everything feels fine."
The club has yet to announce whether Fellhauer will be available for selection again soon.
Augsburg's next match is on January 20 when they travel to face VfL Bochum.
