Man Arrested After Car Rams Gates Of Russian Consulate In Sydney

Russian consulates and embassies have been targeted for vandalism worldwide since the Ukraine crisis began. Sydney, Australia is no exception.

In the early hours of Saturday, a man drove a white Toyota Corolla through the gates of the Russian Consulate in Sydney, damaging the fence and landscaping before coming to a stop on the consulate's front lawn, according to local authorities and media footage. Videos posted to social media showed police arresting the driver, who appeared to be alone in the vehicle.

Police were called to the scene after an alert was triggered just before 1:00 a.m. local time on Saturday. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before being arrested, according to a statement from the New South Wales Police Force. He has since been released from hospital and charged with damaging or destroying property, and breaching a leash of animals, the police said. He is due to appear in court on May 10, 2023.

The Russian Consulate General in Sydney did not respond to a request for comment. The yard of the consulate was still occupied by the car, with its windows completely shattered and broken parts strewn about, nearly 24 hours after the incident. The Russian flag, which was hung on the building, was slightly damaged.

This incident is just one of many vandalism cases that have targeted Russian diplomatic facilities around the world in the last 10 months.
