PM Modi SCO Summit: PM Modi Names Al-Qaeda, Says Nations Backing Terror Must Be Held Accountable

In a significant address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday named Pakistan and its intelligence agency, the ISI, for creating and nurturing terror groups such as the Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Jaish-e-Mohammad, and called for concrete action against such nations.

This is the first time India has named the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad as terror groups that have established networks in other countries too.

Delivering his address at the SCO summit in the Chinese city of Tianjin, the Prime Minister also named the Islamic State terrorist group, saying it has distorted the beautiful religion of Islam, and asserted that the fight against terrorists and their supporters must also identify and dismantle their propaganda machinery.

He called on the SCO member states to work for an inclusive and harmonious world.

"There is an urgent need to combat terror networks and their sponsors," he said, and stressed on holding accountable nations that backed and sheltered terrorists, and a necessity to force them to dismantle such camps.

He said India will work with partners around the world to fight terrorism, including tackling the financing of such activities.

"India wants to deepen cooperation in the SCO in this regard," he added.

The Prime Minister's strong message comes after India recently complained to the SCO about Pakistan's continued support for terrorist groups that have targeted India, including through the use of Afghanistan as a proxy war terrain.

On the sidelines of the SCO summit, Modi will also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks, with the two nations expected to further deepen defence and economic cooperation.

The meeting comes as trade tensions rise with Washington, after US President Donald Trump imposed steep 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports, the highest across Asia, in response to New Delhis continued import of Russian crude.

PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday.

Both leaders agreed to work toward resolving long-standing boundary issues and emphasised the need to expand cooperation, marking PM Modis first trip to China since the border clashes of 2020 strained relations.
