Israel strikes Hamas voice as Gaza City counts its dead

Hospitals report dozens killed as Israel strikes Hamas voice.

Rockets from Gaza had been fired into Israel only hours earlier.

Israel claimed responsibility for killing a senior figure in Hamas' hierarchy of leadership on Sunday night, as residents in Gaza City counted the dead after a series of airstrikes that killed at least 39 people.

Dr. Muhammad Rajah, the deputy minister of Hamas' Ministry of Health, confirmed to Reuters that the group's spokesman, Nadim Hamdan, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.

The overnight airstrikes hit their target during a gathering of Hamas leaders at a mosque, aesthetics, and cultural buildings in Gaza City.

The attack came only hours after rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Sunday, raising fears of more violence ahead.

The Israeli military said its assault was in retaliation for the rocket attack, saying in a statement on Monday: "Following the severe violation of the ceasefire yesterday with the rocket fire against Israeli civilians - and in accordance with Israel's right to self-defense - the Israeli Air Force carried out targeted strikes against senior Hamas commanders."

The Pentagon had warned on Sunday that Israel would "respond aggressively" to the rocket attack.

The deaths came after Palestinian militants fired rockets into Israel on Sunday, ending a period of relative calm along the border.

The violence came as a new Israeli government, sworn in on Sunday, says it intends to take a tougher line against Palestinian militants and Hamas.
