Kyiv Links Russia To Killing Of Ukrainian Lawmaker Andriy Parubiy After Suspect Arrested

One of the architects of Ukraine's pro-European revolution killed in Kyiv. The suspected assassin, a Russian national, was arrested and has confessed, saying Moscow planned the hit job.

Andriy Parubiy, a former speaker of Ukraine's parliament and a key figure in the country's pro-European protest movements in 2004 and 2014, was killed in Kyiv on Thursday, and Ukrainian security services have accused Russia of being behind his assassination.

Parubiy, 54, was shot multiple times by a suspected gunman, identified by Ukrainian media as Russian citizen Vladimir Tereshchenko.

After being arrested, the suspect admitted to killing Parubiy on orders from Moscow, Ukrainian security services claimed.

"The assassin ... admitted that he had been recruited and prepared for the murder by Russian special services," according to a statement released by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).

The SBU also said that Tereshchenko was given a fake identity and citizenship in Russia, which facilitated his move into Ukraine.

This false documentation "was intended to cover up the Kremlin's involvement in the premeditated murder," the SBU said.

The suspected gunman was presented this morning to the media in Kyiv, where he participated in a press conference hosted by the SBU.

Tereshchenko, a native of Russia's Rostov region, was recruited by Russian special services while he was living in Russia-annexed Crimea, the SBU said.

With Ukraine's Security Service vowing to "shed light on the customers and their criminal plans," the assassination has already drawn a strong response from top Ukrainian officials.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the murder on Instagram, writing that "the Ukrainian people will never forgive the murderer of Andrey Parubiy and will certainly make everyone responsible pay."

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described Parubiy's murder as "an act of terrorism by the Kremlin."

Andriy Parubiy was a respected figure in Ukraine and a veteran of the country's pro-European revolution.

As a former speaker of the country's parliament, he was also instrumental in guiding Ukraine's post-revolution political course as a pro-Western, European democracy.

His death is a tragic loss for Ukraine and will likely further inflame tensions between Kyiv and Moscow.
