TMC Protests Stage Dismantled by Army in Kolkata

The West Bengal Election Commission has ordered the Indian Army to dismantle the protest stage of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) close to Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Kolkata's Maidan area on Saturday. This action has led to the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee to allege the BJP's role in the incident and to continue her protest against the incident. The TMC leadership has also termed the development as "unconstitutional and unacceptable."

The stage was set up as a protest against the Election Commission's decision to postpone the release of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls. Both the BJP and the TMC have been accused of violating the model code of conduct (MCC) several times during the ongoing election campaign for the Bengal polls.

The election for 292 municipal wards in Kolkata, Bidhannagar, Chandannagar, Asansol, Siliguri, and Ballygunge zones will be held on February 12.

The development has been viewed as a significant move by the ECI, which has been battling multiple allegations and lawsuits from the TMC over allegations of a biased election process.

The TMC has also alleged that the BJP is using the army to scare voters andemployees in the state and that the army action was a ploy to divert the attention of common people from the issues of the common people.

The ECI is yet to respond to the incident.

The state has been undergoing a tense political atmosphere ahead of the elections, with both the BJP and the TMC trading blame over violent roadshows and protests.

The Kolkata incident has yet again sparked debates over the use of government officials and institutions in poll campaigns.
