New Delhi to Host BWF World Championships Again Soon

After 17 long years, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has decided to bring the BWF World Championships back to New Delhi in August 2026.

The news has brought excitement to the badminton fans and players in India, who will have the opportunity to witness the prestigious tournament on home ground again.

The last time India hosted the BWF World Championships was in 2005, when the men's singles title was won by Denmark's Kenneth Jonassen and the women's singles title was claimed by China's Zhang Ning. India's only home medalist was Prakash Padukone, who had won a bronze medal in the men's singles in the 1982 edition hosted in Bangalore.

The announcement was made on January 17, 2023, by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and BWF, making it the first BWF event to be hosted in India since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The BAI has been regularly bidding for hosting the BWF events since the 2010s, with a failed bid to host the 2023 BWF World Championships, ultimately held in Tokyo, Japan.

The decision to bring the championships back to New Delhi in 2026 is a testament to the growth of badminton in India and a recognition of the country's potential to host world-class sporting events.

With less than three years to go, New Delhi 2026 BWF World Championships is already generating considerable buzz in the badminton world.
