PM Modi Returns To Delhi After Concluding Summit In China

All eyes were on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today as he embarked on his maiden visit to China after the 2022 border standoff in eastern Ladakh that triggered a sharp trust deficit between the two neighbouring nations.

The PM's visit, which lasted two days, was confined to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. But his itinerary had one additional stop a brief stopover in Nepal and this attracted attention as it was seen as a message to China about Indias commitment to its neighbourhood first policy.

On Sunday, PM Modi held a series of bilateral meetings with SCO leaders on the sidelines of the summit. After Xi Jinping, he held bilateral talks with Russia's Putin. Then, in the evening, he departed for Nepal on an unexpected stopover.

He landed in Kathmandu nearly 20 hours ahead of schedule, triggering speculation about whether it was a technical halt or a political one.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who accompanied PM Modi during his visit to Nepal, said that his Indian counterpart's unscheduled stopover in Nepal signaled the priority that India attaches to its neighbourhood and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

Prime Minister Modi returned to Delhi on Sunday evening, wrapping up his brief but high-stakes visit to China.

The PMs visit to China was the first since the 2022 border standoff in eastern Ladakh. With India celebrating 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' this year, the PM's visit is also being seen as a way to improve ties with China, a crucial neighbour amid Indias 'Act East Policy'.
