South African star David Miller has been ruled out of the T20I squad due to a broken finger, but Temba Bavuma insists he is still very much a part of the One Day International (ODI) setup for the upcoming matches and the 2027 World Cup.
"He's still around. We have a session today and he'll fall back and join our ODI squad. He'll fall back into that plan," Bavuma said in the post-match press conference on Tuesday.
"Obviously, he'll be assessed on the injury and the diagnosis and what the specialists have said in terms of his recovery. But I imagine he will be part of the plan. I think there's a lot of cricket to be played between now and the World Cup. I imagine there will be opportunities to bounce back into the ODI squad," he further added.
The 31-year-old Miller, who was rested for the ODIs against India, was upbeat about his return to the squad, saying, "I'll be there cheering my guys on they're a talented group and I have no doubt they'll do it justice."
With Miller's injury, it seems that a vacancy has opened up in the T20I squad. Bavuma further talked about the potential for a player to step up and fill that void.
"There's an opportunity for someone to stake a claim and put their hand up, and also for the coaching staff to have a look and see -- in the absence of Dave, given what he brings to the team -- what else is there, in terms of the balance and the make-up of the side," he said.
With South Africa looking to reclaim their dominance in the cricket world, Miller's return in the ODI setup could be a significant boost, as they look to shed the disappointment of their loss against India in the Test and ODI series.
