It was a heartbreaking conclusion to an energetic performance as a 45-year-old man died after collapsing on stage during Onam celebrations at an event organised by the Kerala legislative assembly. The man, identified as Vijilesh, was among the dancers performing rhythmic steps on a stage especially erected for the festival at the assembly premises in Thiruvananthapuram on August 22.
According to reports, Vijilesh, who worked as a driver at the Kerala Assembly, was dancing to the beats of the drum when he suddenly collapsed forward, and his head hit the wooden stage. Vijilesh, who was immediately rushed to a hospital, breathed his last later that evening.
Onam is a major festival in the state of Kerala, which falls in the month of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar. Usually, marked by festivities, gatherings, colourful costumes, traditional food, and dances, the festival this year turned tragic for the Vijilesh's family, friends, and colleagues.
Colleagues and friends described Vijilesh as a healthy and enthusiastic man, even calling him the 'fittest' among their group. They are shocked and shattered and organising events to support the deceased's family.
In a statement, Congress legislator and cultural secretary of the Kerala Legislative Assembly Anoop Jacob expressed his condolences and stated that the Assembly would extend all help to the deceased's family, including his wife and two children, aged 11 and 13.
The exact cause of Vijilesh's death is not known, and an autopsy report is expected to shed more light on the situation.
