In another infrastructure-related failure in India's cyber hub, a portion of Banjara Hills Road Number 2 caved in due to a collapsed manhole slab, causing minor traffic congestion this morning. Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) blamed the incident on the age of the sewer line, which, dating back to the 1980s, could no longer support the heavy vehicular traffic around Banjara Hills.
The incident, the third of its kind in the city in the past month, occurred at 8 a.m. this morning. The manhole cover collapsed, leaving a hole five to six feet deep in the road. The GHMC has placed barricades around the affected area to ensure commuter safety and informed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) of the responsibility to repair.
According to B Vijay Kumar, the GHMC engineer from the Jubilee Hills circle, "the HMWSSB will begin work on replacing the manhole cover tonight, when traffic subsides, and expects to complete the repair within a few hours." Officials from HMWSSB explained that the manhole cover collapse was due to the weight of the heavy traffic, and 40-year-old infrastructure that is struggling to keep up.
Despite recent incidents, officials assure residents that repair work should be completed within a few hours, aiming to cause minimal disruption to commuters overnight. Unfortunately for India's tech city, this cave-in follows a string of infrastructure-related disasters, raising concerns about the city's infrastructure stability.
