Kochi has witnessed a notable rise in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the first eight months of the year compared to the previous year.
According to official data, while 2,475 NDPS cases were registered within the Kochi City limits in 2023, it stood at 2,138 by August of this year. Similarly, 2,793 people were arrested in drug cases in 2024, while 2,372 were nabbed till August 2025.
Seizures have also increased notably. In the 'commercial quantity' category last year, 44 cases were recorded, while it's 34 so far this year. In the 'intermediate quantity' category, the year 2025 is nearing the figure of 2024 which stood at 118, and till August this year, 90 seizures have been made.
Even in the case of small quantity seizures, the trend is the same: 1,699 in 2024 and 1,508 this year. Kochi City Narcotics Cell Assistant Commissioner K.A. Abdul Salam attributed the rise to an influx of narcotic items into the city and heightened police surveillance.
Aggressive searches are being conducted with the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force. The city police have already confiscated 325.46 kg of suspected ganja this year, close to the 331.51 kg seized by December last year.
