SC Dismisses Pleas Against Bail Granted To One Of The Accused In Udaipur Tailor's Murder Case

The Supreme Court dismissed pleas against bail granted to one of the accused in the Udaipur tailor's murder case on Monday. It was hearing appeals from the NIA and Yash Teli, Lal's son, against the High Court's order granting bail to Raquib Javed in the case.

The court said it found no merit in the petitions and charged the NIA with not filing a chargesheet within the stipulated time. The top court noted that the investigation agency should have known that Javed's bail plea had a good chance of succeeding before the High Court.

Yash Teli, the son of the deceased tailor, Lal Mohammad, accused Javed of influencing witnesses in the case and asked for the Supreme Court to set aside the bail order. Under Section 437 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a court can grant bail to a defendant if it believes that there are reasonable grounds to presume that the defendant is not guilty of the offense.

The case will now be sent back to the High Court to decide on Javed's bail application within six weeks.

The tailor's murder in Udaipur, Rajasthan, had sparked widespread public outrage and protests throughout the country in October 2020. After local rumors that the murder was motivated by religious hatred, Muslims were attacked in several cities.
