House Anxiety: Farmers Protest State's Land Grab

Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district has been rocked by protests as villagers rallied against the state government, which intends to repurpose agricultural land for a low-income housing scheme.

Families that have worked the land for over half a century are outraged, claiming that the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government is doing "injustice" to them.

Protesters threatened to commit suicide through self-immolation if their concerns were not addressed. They believe that if the government wants to aid the impoverished, it should concentrate on utilizing idle government land in the Vijayawada area.

One woman, who identified herself as a Dalit, claimed that the issue began after Jagan came to power, and that they were targeted, threatened, and even assaulted by YSRCP MPs. She claimed that officials charged Rs 20,000 for every cent and that police threatened daily vacate land.

No resolution is in sight, as aggrieved villagers filed a petition to the Collector, local MLAs, and MRO to stop the acquisition.
