India and Nigeria have submitted proposals to host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, marking the 100-year anniversary of the multinational competition. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has received the proposals and the formal invitation will be sent out by August 2023.
The decision on the host country for the prestigious event will be taken at the CGF General Assembly, set to convene in September 2023 in Rwandan capital city Kigali. The other countries possibly in the running include Canada, Australia, and the UK.
Canada had initially shown interest in bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games but later withdrew due to budgetary constraints. The country is currently preparing to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Hamilton, making it the first city in Canada to do so.
Nigeria, on the other hand, has never hosted any Commonwealth Games before. Africa's most populous country and largest economy, Nigeria last participated in the Commonwealth Games in 2014, with a contingent of 97 athletes who competed in nine sports.
The CGF, headed by former Olympic swimmer Dame Louise Martin, has been committed to expanding the Commonwealth Games Federation, with the ultimate goal of making it more accessible and inclusive to its 71 member nations.
With India and Nigeria throwing their hats in the ring to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games, the landmark event is shaping up to be a showcase of the diverse sporting talents and competitive spirit of the Commonwealth nations.
The decision awaits in September 2023, until then we can only speculate at who will be crowned the host.
