Hyderabad-based cybercrime officials have issued a warning after two cases of online fraud resulted in victims losing nearly Rs. 2 lakh.
The two incidents, which both took place in Hyderabad, involved fake customer care numbers and unauthorized transactions through wallets. A 69-year-old man added Rs. 4,193 to his wife's account and Rs. 98,001 to his daughter-in-law's bank account after scamsters posing as company representatives contacted him via WhatsApp. They had tricked him into downloading an APK file once they had accessed his family's devices.
In the second incident, a 37-year-old man from Chandrayangutta lost Rs. 11,740 from his digital wallet. After adding Rs. 21.12 lakh to his wallet for the purchase of gold coins, fraudsters changed his registered mobile number and email ID, and then made three unauthorized transactions.
The advisory from the police urges citizens to exercise caution when dealing with online transactions. Key advice includes not trusting customer care numbers found through Google; not downloading APK files shared on WhatsApp or Telegram; enabling two-factor authentication on e-wallets; monitoring bank and wallet activity regularly; and never sharing login details or OTPs with anyone.
Officials emphasized that quick reporting and vigilance are crucial to preventing further financial damage.
