Unveiling India's Past: Student Exhibition Explores Ancient History in Mumbai

History is a constantly evolving entity, where the past remains relevant through its lasting influences. Monuments and historical artifacts serve as windows into bygone eras, helping us connect with our rich heritage. Embracing this philosophy, the young scholars of Ramnarain Ruia College (Autonomous), Matunga, are embarking on a journey through ancient Indian history with an engaging exhibition. Organized by second-year History students, the event will delve into India’s ancient knowledge systems, temple art, and architectural marvels from 300 BCE to 1000 CE.

Now in its third edition, this annual exhibition is a flagship initiative of the college’s History department. “This is one of the ways we ensure experiential learning for our students. By engaging with history beyond textbooks, they gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of India’s heritage,” explains Pradeep Waghmare, the head of the department.

The exhibition presents a meticulously researched study of early Indian civilization, highlighting aspects such as maritime trade routes of the Mauryan Empire, the intricate Dravidian architecture of the Chola and Pallava temples, and the post-classical art of the early medieval period. The students have spent over a month conducting in-depth research, consulting resources like UNESCO archives to ensure historical accuracy. “The process was challenging yet immensely enriching,” shares Jiya Dagliya, one of the participating students.

Adding a sustainable touch, all exhibits are crafted from eco-friendly materials, reinforcing the importance of responsible academic practices. Through this initiative, the students not only celebrate India’s past but also encourage mindful engagement with history, making it a living, breathing experience rather than just a subject of study.
