Himachal Pradesh continues to be battered by heavy rainfall, leading to several landslides and road closures, leaving the state administration scrambling to respond.
As fresh deluges added to the woes of the state, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for isolated pockets of the state on Tuesday, and an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday.
The regional meteorological department has predicted more heavy rains for the next four to five days, with forecasts of the well-known tourist destination of Manali receiving upwards of 100mm of rainfall until next week.
Some districts have already recorded more than 100mm of rainfall, causing landslides on many routes, including the Manali-Leh highway.
Local authorities have closed several roads and evacuated people from vulnerable areas. On social media, some residents posted videos of landslides and flooding, as well as images of damaged roads and flooded streets in various districts.
The state government has also ordered the closure of all educational institutions until further notice.
"The education department has been directed to ensure the safety of students and prevent any harm being caused to them," said the order, adding that schools and colleges should remain shut "till the weather improves".
According to local media reports, many parts of Himachal Pradesh have experienced power outages, with several areas still awaiting the restoration of electricity.
The state administration has activated its emergency response plans, and disaster management teams have been dispatched to affected areas.
State officials have advised residents to remain indoors unless necessary and to follow all safety protocols and warnings issued by local authorities.
"The administration is monitoring the situation closely and is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of everyone," said a senior state official. "We request the public to cooperate with us and follow the safety guidelines."
Despite the disruptions, state officials are confident in their ability to deal with the ongoing weather-related challenges and are working to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Himachal Pradesh.
"We are doing our best to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains and to ensure a quick recovery for the state," said the official. "Please be cautious, and we will get through this together."
