Hasdeo forests threatened by illegal coal mining, power projects

The Hasdeo Arand forest, known as the lung of central India is struggling to breathe, sadly. This forest is home to 640 floral species, 128 medicinal plants, 92 bird species, and numerous endangered animals. Sadly, illegal coal mining and hydropower projects are posing a significant threat to this vital ecosystem and its wildlife.

Recently, police arrested around 24 people for alleged illegal coal mining in Hasdeo Arand. This arrest came following a tip-off regarding the illegal operations in the forest. Sadly, it is not the first time such operations have been curbed. Illegal mining has been rampant for quite some time now and is devastating this vital ecosystem.

Moreover, it is not just illegal coal mining that poses a threat to these forests. There are several hydropower projects underway that will lead to the submergence of over 266 hectares of forest land. These projects include the construction of dams through which the forests' ecosystem and wildlife will be affected significantly.

The Hasdeo Area Residents' Action Committee (HARAC) is a group of locals advocating for the preservation of these forests. Unfortunately, their efforts are not enough to save these precious ecosystems. The forest department, too, seems to be turning a blind eye to the issue.

In conclusion, the lung of central India is in dire need of attention and protection. Action must be taken to prevent the damage and destruction of such a pristine and vital ecosystem. Again, I commend the efforts of citizen groups like HARAC, but the fight for the preservation of this forest needs to be taken up by the local administration and the central government. Only then we can ensure the preservation of our natural treasures.
