Hyderabad police arrest scammer targeting young job seekers

Job offers may just be too good to be true, warns the Hyderabad Police, who recently arrested a man for allegedly defrauding a student with the promise of employment at Accenture. The arrest was made by the city's cyber crime division.

The accused, Ponnaganti Tej Kumar, is a habitual offender with previous cases of cyber fraud registered against him in the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda tri-commissionerates. Authorities state that Kumar, aged 30, duped a 23-year-old student out of 1.7 lakh by posing as an HR representative of the consulting firm. The victim was contacted via WhatsApp, and the fraudster used a spoofed email resembling a genuine Accenture employee to convince the student of authenticity. The victim made four payments totalling 1.7 lakh as "processing charges" before the accused ceased all contact, prompting the victim to file a complaint.

The police have seized Kumar's phone used in the crime and have registered a case under the IT Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials have advised job seekers to be vigilant, to directly verify offers with companies, and never to pay for job opportunities.

As investigations continue, the police urge citizens to report similar suspicious job offers to the Cyber Crime helpline 1930 or through the website www.cybercrime.gov.in.

This is an alert for all eager job seekers: be vigilant and cautious, as fraudsters are ready to take advantage of your vulnerability. As the old saying goes, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
