Boy accused of murder over cricket bat theft

A 14-year-old boy is accused of killing his neighbor, an 10-year-old girl, over the theft of a cricket bat, police said on Tuesday, highlighting what one official described as a tragic tale of children influenced by violent games and films.

The boy, who has not been identified for legal reasons, was arrested at his family's home in Hyderabad, in India's southern Telangana state, late on Monday night.

"The 10-year-old girl, who lives in the same apartment complex, came to the boy's house around 6 pm asking for a cricket bat. She wanted to play cricket with her friends," V. Venkatesham, assistant commissioner of police, told AFP.

"The boy wasn't interested in giving her the bat. He took the bat from her, pulled out a knife and threatened her. Shocked, the girl ran back to her house and informed her parents."

The girl's parents lodged a complaint with the local police station, which reportedly advised the family to settle the matter amicably as the children were young.

But hours later the girl's body was found in a vacant plot near the apartments. She had been stabbed to death, according to local media reports.

"Everyone is shocked that a young boy, influenced by movies and games, could commit such a horrific murder," Venkatesham said.

"We have arrested the boy and he will be produced before the court today," he added. "We are investigating whether he was influenced by such movies or if he was suffering from any mental disorder."

The teenager reportedly admitted to killing the girl during questioning, and showed investigators where he had hidden the murder weapon.
