Young Women in Bathinda Fear Rising Incidents of Sexual Harassment

Incidents of eve-teasing, lewd comments, and inappropriate gestures are rising in major parts of the city of Bathinda, including Ajit Road and Mall Road areas. These incidents occur despite police efforts to stop them.

Recently, three young men attempted to kidnap a woman from Giddarbaha near Fouji Chowk, a crowded intersection, in broad daylight. The woman screamed for help, and the men ran off when others arrived. This incident occurred despite the presence of two police posts near Fouji Chowk.

Ajit Road has also seen several instances of eve-teasing in the past due to its many coaching institutes. Recently, a group of four young men chased two female students up to Fire Brigade Chowk, where police officers are deployed. The men shouted lewd comments at the women before escaping.

A girl filed a complaint with police alleging that four unidentified men in a car made indecent gestures at her and her friend while they were driving on Ajit Road a few months ago. The men were charged with Section 354-D of the IPC and Section 12 of the POSCO Act at the Civil Lines police station.

Girls in Bathinda continue to face these issues despite many protests and policies aimed at combating sexual harassment. Often, fear of social stigma prevents victims from reporting these incidents to the police.

SSP Naveen Singla asserts that the police have initiated strict action against those involved in eve-teasing cases, declaring that no one would be spared.
