Hyderabad's Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) director, Shikha Goel, argues that proactive policing, not reactive policing, is the most effective method for combatting cybercrime. Speaking at the International Institute for Information Technology's (IIIT-H) 28th foundation day, Goel emphasized the urgency of proactive strategies to combat the skyrocketing number of cybercrime cases. Predicted losses of $12 trillion due to online money extortion by 2026 would make the global cybercrime racket the third-largest economy in the world. Telangana alone lost Rs 1,900 crore in 2024, with 250 new cybercrime cases reported daily.
According to Goel, proactive tactics are necessary to combat this issue, referring to the newly launched cybersecurity innovation lab, aVyuha . Sandeep Shukla, the director of IIIT-H, assures the lab will assist in predicting and preventing future cyberattacks using AI and other technologies. Telangana has long been at the forefront of the fight against cybercrime, launching several initiatives and tools like the lab. Its efforts have resulted in an 11% decline in cybercrime cases while the rest of the nation saw a 37% increase.
The aVyuha lab will also foster the creation of Indian-based technology startups for cybercrime solutions.
