In a big win for the Kolkata Police which came under fierce attack from the BJP top brass, a senior leader of the latter Rakesh Singh was arrested on Thursday in connection with the attack on the West Bengal Congress office on December 14. A team of the Kolkata Police arrested him from PS Marvella, a private residence in Kolkatas Tangra area, after a raid at around 2 p.m., a high-ranking official of the Kolkata Police said. He is likely to be produced in court today.
The arrest came a day after the city police filed a charge sheet before a city court against four people, including two BJP leaders, in connection with the incident that had brought the state's administration under sharp focus ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament. BJP leaders and Union Ministers Amit Shah and Dharmendra Pradhan had attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Kolkata Police for allegedly not acting on the complaints of the BJP workers and for failing to protect its leaders and workers from intimidation and violence.
Defending its decision to file the charge sheet, the Kolkata Police said in a statement that the investigation into the incident was continuing and urged everyone to refrain from attempting to create a narrative to defame the state and its law enforcement machinery. It added that the investigation would continue without any influence.
The incident had taken place during the December 10 visit of PM Narendra Modi to the city. City police commissioner Soumen Mitra was subsequently transferred amid a furore over the attack, perceived as an embarrassment for the administration.
