Andhra Pradesh power sector records 20% growth in generation: Minister Ravi Kumar

Andhra Pradesh Power Sector has recorded a 20% growth in power generation, according to State Energy Minister Peddi Ravi Kumar. In a statement delivered in the state assembly, Kumar reported a substantial rise in thermal and renewable energy output.

Most of the major projects in the sector are currently on track, the Minister added. Among the thermal power projects, the state-owned NTPC is setting up a new thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,600 megawatts (MW) at Ramagundam. Meanwhile, the National Aluminium Company (NALCO) is planning to establish a 1,200 MW coal-based power plant in Mannavaram.

In the renewable energy segment, the state government is implementing a massive 2,000 MW solar park at Orvakal in the Kurnool district, co-located with 1,000 MW thermal power project. "With the addition of these projects, the total installed capacity in the state will go up to 28,685 MW by the end of 2022," said Ravi Kumar.

The Minister also announced that the Electricity Department has collected Rs 142.74 crores in revenue shares from the renewable energy developers between 2019 and 2021.

Kumar assured the members of the state legislature that the government would take all necessary measures to further improve the power situation in the state. "With the addition of new projects and efforts made for augmented power generation, the state will be able to meet the power requirements locally," he said.

The Minister's statement comes as a welcome update for Andhra Pradesh, battling electricity shortages and load shedding in recent years. With projects underway and increased output from existing facilities, the state is hoping to meet local power demands and deliver reliable electricity to its growing population and industries.
