Heat Preparedness Workshop Organized to Combat Rising Temperatures

In October 2024, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) jointly organized a state-level heat preparedness workshop in Jaipur. The initiative aimed to address the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves in the region by strengthening response mechanisms and protecting vulnerable populations.

The workshop brought together government officials, disaster management experts, health professionals, and climate scientists to discuss strategies for mitigating the effects of extreme heat. Key topics included the development of early warning systems, improved urban planning to reduce heat absorption, and community outreach programs to raise awareness. Experts highlighted the need for heat action plans at district and municipal levels, focusing on targeted interventions such as cooling centers, water distribution, and public awareness campaigns.

Health experts emphasized the importance of educating communities about heat-related illnesses and promoting preventive measures such as hydration and avoiding outdoor activities during peak temperatures. Special attention was given to protecting high-risk groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. Discussions also covered the role of sustainable infrastructure, such as heat-resistant building materials and increased green cover in urban areas, to reduce the urban heat island effect.

Officials from the Rajasthan State Disaster Management Authority (RSDMA) reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the recommendations from the workshop. Plans were discussed to integrate heatwave preparedness into existing disaster management policies, ensuring a coordinated response at all administrative levels.

The workshop concluded with a roadmap for future actions, emphasizing collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, and local communities to build long-term resilience against rising temperatures. The event marked a crucial step toward strengthening Rajasthan’s ability to combat the growing threat of heatwaves.
