Satheesan non-committal on Rahul Mamkootathils attendance in Assembly

The leader of the opposition in Kerala, V D Satheesan, is keeping the decision to attend the Assembly session, beginning on September 15, close to his chest, saying that the UDF will take a call at an 'appropriate time'. This comes a day after senior Congress leader and former Minister Rahul Mamkootathil said that the Congress should not attend the session unless the BJP apologizes for the remarks made about the former Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan.

The opposition UDF in Kerala is in a quandary over its attendance in the Assembly session beginning on September 15, with its leader V D Satheesan saying the decision on attendance would be taken at an "appropriate time".

The opposition is scrambling for a response after senior Congress leader and former Minister Rahul Mamkootathil said the Congress should not attend the session unless the BJP apologizes for the remarks made about the former Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan.

Speaking to the media, Satheesan said that the UDF has its policy to tackle such situations. "There is a procedure to be followed when attending the Assembly session. The assembly notice was sent to the UDF secretariat. We will take the appropriate decision at the appropriate time," he told reporters.

The statement comes a day after Mamkootathil told media persons that the Congress should not attend the session unless the BJP apologizes for the remarks made about Khan, who caused a flutter in the political circles by commenting on the landmark September 6 Supreme Court judgment.

"The BJP leadership and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav's comments on Arif Mohammed Khan are a shameful act that has drawn the attention of the entire nation. Unless the BJP tenders an apology for this, Congress should not attend the Assembly proceedings," Mamkootathil said.

The former Minister's remarks came in response to the notice sent to the UDF secretariat regarding the Assembly session, which stated that the UDF should inform the Speaker's Council whether it would attend the session.

The BJP has caused a stir in the state by stating that Khan had colluded with the Congress to malign the image of the state by commenting on the top court's judgment, which redefined the interpretation of Article 376 of the Constitution in the context of sexual assault.
