Relay Medallist Gets Two-Year Doping Ban From NADA For Using Clomifene

Summy Kaliraman, part of India's 4x400m women's relay team that won a bronze medal at the 2021 World U20 Championships, has been banned for two years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for doping.

22-year-old Kaliraman, a native of Kerala, had tested positive for the prohibited substance clomifene, which is used to stimulate ovulation and treat some types of infertility. She had undergone an out-of-competition test in September 2022.

Kaliraman, a former national junior champion, had tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in September 2020, for which she was banned for a year by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

She is not the only Indian athlete to have been banned for doping lately. Two athletes representing India at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, shotputter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and sprinter Dutee Chand, were handed four-year and two-year bans respectively last year.

The NADA ban on Kaliraman, which amounts to a career derailment, underscores the increasing importance of educating athletes about performance-enhancing drugs and the necessity for comprehensive testing to ensure fair play in sports.
