IOC Restores Olympic Solidarity Funding To India After Reforms

India has resumed its status as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Solidarity, following the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) ratification of key organisational reforms, including the appointment of a new CEO.

The decision was taken at the IOC Session in Cairo on Monday, marking the end of a lengthy conflict between the IOC and the IOA, which has seen India excluded from numerous Olympics, including the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The IOA's implementation of a new Constitution and the election of a new Executive Board, which included the appointment of professional sports administrator Raghuram Iyer as its new CEO, satisfied the IOC's demand for political reforms within the organisation.

In a statement, the IOC said, "The IOC welcomes this important step and the full normalization of its relations with the IOA. The IOC also took note of the IOA's clear commitment to fully respect the Olympic Charter and its principles."

The latest decision means that Indian athletes and officials can now receive funding and access technical support from the IOC's Olympic Solidarity programme, benefiting their preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The IOA's decision to restore its internal democracy and professionalise its administration is a positive step for Indian sport. It is hoped that this decision will empower athletes and provide them with greater support to perform at their best.

The end to this longstanding dispute illustrates the IOC's commitment to ensuring that the Olympic Movement in India is in line with the values and principles of the Olympic Charter.

It is now expected that Indian athletes can focus their efforts on achieving excellence in their respective sports, with the support of the IOC and Olympic Solidarity.
